Lagos, Nigeria – Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has offered to meet the bail conditions for human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi, who is involved in a defamation case brought by legal luminary Afe Babalola, was granted bail by an Ekiti Magistrate Court. The conditions of the bail include a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own a house), the surrender of his passport, and a restriction from granting media interviews.
The announcement was made by Tanko Yunusa, a former spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, in a statement posted on Friday via his X account. Yunusa revealed that Obi’s decision was rooted in his respect for the rule of law and a desire to see the matter resolved in a fair and lawful manner.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa said.
Obi also extended his gratitude to the courts and other parties involved in the case. “His concern is that the situation be resolved in the best interest of all parties and our legal system. He extended his sincere appreciation to all concerned,” Yunusa added.
Farotimi’s case has garnered significant public attention, and Obi’s intervention underscores his commitment to justice and the legal process.
