Abuja, Nigeria – The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Ogun State, Barrister ‘Niyi Ijalaye, has passed away.
According to reliable sources, Ijalaye collapsed and died on Monday evening in Abuja after attending a meeting of RECs at the Commission’s headquarters. The incident reportedly occurred in his hotel room shortly after he returned from the meeting.
A source within the Ogun State INEC office, who preferred to remain anonymous, disclosed that Ijalaye was in good spirits throughout the meeting and showed no signs of distress. However, after retiring to his hotel in the Federal Capital Territory, the tragic incident took place.
The meeting, chaired by INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu, focused on upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies. Prof Yakubu shared details of the meeting on the Commission’s official Facebook page.
Niyi Ijalaye, who was dressed in a blue striped kaftan with a red cap during the meeting, was seen in photographs posted by the Commission. He was appointed as the Ogun State REC in March 2022, following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos State.
The late Ijalaye was a native of Ondo State and was known for his dedication to his role in INEC. His sudden death has shocked colleagues and officials within the Commission.
