Charles Heart Ex-inmates Reformation Foundation Secures Release of Inmates from Ilesa Correctional Centre Osun State

The Charles Heart Ex-inmates Reformation Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has successfully facilitated the release of four inmates from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State by covering various fines imposed by the court.

In a commendable gesture, the foundation has also donated two tyres and a car battery to the correctional facility, aimed at enhancing the transport of inmates to court for their trials. The inmates, who had been handed down different sentences for a range of offences, were unable to pay their court-imposed fines until the intervention of the foundation. According to Director Charles Osaghae, over N1 million was spent to secure their freedom.

Osaghae noted that the foundation is not stopping there; it intends to provide free legal services to some inmates currently at the facility. “We paid over N1 million to secure the release of four inmates from Ilesa Correctional Centre. Additionally, we supplied two tyres and a battery to assist in the transportation of inmates to court. We also plan to offer legal assistance to other inmates here,” he stated.

The foundation has a track record, having previously assisted 39 inmates at both Kirikiri Prison in Lagos and Agodi Correctional Facility in Ibadan by paying their fines.

Osaghae expressed a deep commitment to helping vulnerable individuals, stating, “I have a passion for those who find themselves in difficult situations. Regardless of their circumstances, I believe it is our duty as human beings to ensure they experience freedom.”

He urged the government to take more proactive measures to enhance the living conditions in correctional centers and provide legal representation for inmates unable to afford a lawyer. Osaghae pointed out that some individuals are imprisoned solely due to their lack of access to legal counsel, which raises serious concerns regarding justice.

Furthermore, he called on affluent members of society to step up their contributions towards aiding vulnerable groups, emphasizing, “There are wealthy individuals in this country who have the resources to make a difference but haven’t taken action. We must increase our support for those in need.”

Abolarin Ashaolu, the officer in charge of the Ilesa Correctional Centre, praised the foundation for its efforts, stating that such acts of kindness should be embraced and encouraged among Nigerians.
