Ibadan – The Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest of 153 suspected armed robbers across various locations in the state over the past six months.
The Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, on Friday.
According to Sonubi, the arrests were part of the command’s intensified efforts to reduce crime through intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and proactive policing.
“From June 16 to date, the command has successfully apprehended 153 armed robbery suspects. Additionally, 12 stolen vehicles, 12 motorcycles/tricycles, 48 firearms, and 1,396 rounds of ammunition have been recovered from the suspects,” the CP stated.
He also revealed that 36 suspects involved in various criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and truck hijacking, were paraded. These arrests were made across the 33 Local Government Areas of the state.
Sonubi emphasized that the state police would continue deploying resources to ensure the safety of residents as the year winds down. He directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to intensify patrols and secure critical infrastructure, recreational facilities, public spaces, and major routes.
“As we approach the end of 2024, I have instructed that all critical infrastructures, media houses, banks, correctional centers, places of worship, and adjoining highways be adequately manned by our personnel,” he said.
The CP further charged officers to remain professional and avoid actions that could tarnish the image of the force, warning that erring personnel would face disciplinary measures.
“Our monitoring and X-squad units have been tasked to decisively address misconduct, including extortion and incivility, among officers,” Sonubi added.
