39 Killed in Highway Massacre in Pakistan’s Baluchistan Province
Islamabad, Pakistan – At least 39 people were killed on Monday in Highway Massacre in Pakistan’s southwestern Baluchistan province, one of the deadliest days in recent years. The assaults, claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), targeted mainly ethnic Punjabis in coordinated strikes across three districts.
The most severe attack occurred in Musakhail district, where militants stopped vehicles on a highway and executed 23 people after identifying them as Punjabis. The BLA, a separatist group, stated that their operation aimed at security personnel, though civilians were among the victims.
Additional attacks in Bolan and Kalat districts led to further casualties, including the destruction of a railway bridge and the killing of paramilitary officers and civilians.
These attacks highlight the ongoing violence in Baluchistan, Pakistan’s poorest province, where separatist militants have intensified their efforts against the Pakistani state and its perceived exploitation of the region’s resources.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attacks, expressing deep grief over the loss of life. The surge in violence in Baluchistan comes amid broader instability in Pakistan, particularly in regions bordering Afghanistan.
