Enugu, Nigeria – Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, has revealed that he donated over N200 million within a week to support education.

He made this disclosure on Saturday during the 70th-anniversary celebration of Queens School Enugu, organized by the Queens School Old Girls Association (QSEOGA).

Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, emphasized the critical role education plays in securing the future of young Nigerians. He explained that his contributions were aimed at discouraging youth from crime and empowering the next generation through quality education.

“On Monday, I was in Onitsha for the opening of a new university, followed by a visit to Borromeo College of Nursing. On Tuesday, I was at Anyigba in Kogi State to address students’ needs, and by Thursday, I was in an Almajiri school in Kaduna for the same purpose,” Obi stated.

Highlighting the importance of investing in education, Obi warned that no country can succeed without prioritizing learning. He also decried the deteriorating condition of Queens School Enugu, a once-prestigious institution that had produced many distinguished individuals.

“A school that was once celebrated has now lost its glory due to neglect. I urge the old students of this school to come together and rebuild it,” he said, pledging to partner with the association to restore the school’s reputation.

Mrs. Ifeanyi Egbunike, National President of QSEOGA, echoed Obi’s sentiments, noting that the school had suffered from a lack of new infrastructure. “I graduated in 1974, and while we are celebrating the school’s long history, many things have gone wrong. We chose Obi because he is a visionary, result-oriented, and a strong advocate for education,” she said.

Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu, Chairperson of QSEOGA’s Enugu chapter, added that the association is working closely with the Enugu State Government to uplift the school. She noted that Queens School Enugu, established on October 4, 1954, has produced numerous professionals, including renowned economist Prof. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The event brought alumni from around the world to celebrate the school’s 70-year legacy and discuss strategies for rebuilding its facilities.
