Rivers State House of Assembly Debunks Governor’s Investment Promotion Agency
The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has declared that the recently constituted Rivers State Investment Promotion Agency by Governor Siminalayi Fubara is illegal. The House, loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has also condemned all appointments made by the governor on account of the board as unknown to law.
At its sitting on Thursday, the House reviewed a report presented by Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce and Industry, Gerald Oforji, on the purported inauguration of the Board of the Rivers State Investment Promotion Agency. The committee stated that the creation of such an agency would have attracted businesses to the state and created a conducive climate for growth. However, it lamented the absence of any law establishing the agency.
According to the committee’s report, if such a law existed, the individuals appointed would have been subject to confirmation by the Rivers State House of Assembly. The House members expressed disappointment at the governor’s action, citing that it demonstrates a disregard for governance norms and decency.
Speaker Amaewhule emphasized that the governor’s actions are condemnable and that he is deliberately acting in defiance of extant laws and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as altered. He warned that such infractions will be properly addressed.
The House’s decision has raised questions about the legality of the governor’s actions and has sparked debate about the role of government agencies in promoting investment in the state.
