Abuja, Nigeria – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the Federal Government for prioritizing the arrest of protesters while ignoring the escalating insecurity in various parts of the country.

In a post on his X page on Wednesday, Abubakar condemned the recent terrorist attack in Yobe State, which resulted in several deaths, and highlighted the increasing violence across the North-West and North-Central regions.

“Despite the tragic bloodshed in Yobe, which has claimed scores of lives, and the rampant destruction across numerous villages in Katsina, Sokoto, and other towns within the North-West and North-Central regions, the government seems to remain detached, engrossed in inconsequential affairs,” he said.

Abubakar also noted that the insecurity extends to southern Nigeria, where Boko Haram’s activities and political instability are contributing to unrest. He criticized the government’s focus on silencing dissent and imposing harsh penalties on protesters rather than addressing the root causes of insecurity.

“The atrocity in Yobe is a stark testament to the failure of the current security framework, demanding immediate and comprehensive reform. My heart goes out to the victims of these horrific attacks, and I fervently implore the Tinubu administration to demonstrate a heightened commitment to safeguarding life and property across the nation,” Abubakar added.

The attack in Yobe occurred on Sunday when insurgents targeted Mafa village in the Tarmuwa Local Government Area, killing several people and burning homes. According to the police, the full number of casualties has yet to be confirmed.

In the wake of the attack, the Kaduna State government held funeral prayers for 34 victims, with Deputy Governor Idi Barde-Gubana expressing sympathy for the families affected. The state government vowed to work closely with the Federal Government to bolster military presence in the region and prevent future attacks.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has also been directed to provide support to displaced individuals and those injured during the attack.
