Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has addressed the people of the state in the wake of the political crisis that led to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

In a statement, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to peace, stability, and the rule of law, stressing that his administration has consistently prioritized the security of lives and property while ensuring the progress of Rivers State.

“Since assuming office as your Governor, all my actions and decisions have been guided by my constitutional oath of office and a great sense of duty,” Fubara stated.

He highlighted efforts made to restore political stability, including complying with the Supreme Court’s judgment and welcoming back commissioners who had previously resigned. He noted that these steps were taken in good faith to foster peace and unity in the state.

However, the governor lamented that the Rivers State House of Assembly had repeatedly frustrated these peace efforts, making governance difficult.

“Despite political disagreements, good governance has continued. Salaries have been paid, and key projects executed to move the state forward. Above all, Rivers State remains safe, secure, and peaceful under our watch,” he assured.

Fubara urged Rivers residents to remain law-abiding and patient as his administration engages with relevant institutions to protect democracy and ensure the state’s continued development.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” he concluded.

The political turmoil in Rivers State has intensified in recent weeks, prompting President Tinubu’s intervention. The declaration of a state of emergency marks a significant escalation, as tensions between the executive and legislative arms of the state government persist.

Observers are closely watching how the situation unfolds and the potential impact on governance and security in the oil-rich state.
