The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), announced the election results on Saturday, declaring 23 candidates of the Action Peoples Party (APP) as winners of the October 5 local government elections.

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, will today swear in the newly elected local government chairmen at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 4:00 p.m., according to a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo.

The statement, dated Sunday, October 6, 2024, indicated that the elected chairmen, along with one guest each, are expected to be seated by 3:30 p.m. for the event.

The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), announced the election results on Saturday, declaring 22 candidates of the Action Peoples Party (APP) as winners of the October 5 local government elections.

Enebeli, who also served as the Chief Electoral Commissioner for the election, noted that the APP candidates secured a majority of valid votes in two-thirds of their respective wards across the 22 local government areas.

The election process was marred by incidents of violence in some areas. Suspected political thugs, along with individuals in police uniforms, disrupted voting at Elekahia Primary School in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, forcing RSIEC officers and voters to flee. Witnesses reported that 21 Hilux patrol vans with heavily armed men stormed the election venue and deployed tear gas.

In addition, two explosions were reported at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat along Aba Road and the Obio/Akpor Local Government secretariat. The state police command confirmed that its officers had visited the scenes and collected samples as part of an ongoing investigation.
