U.S. Intelligence Reveals Foreign Interference as Stolen Trump Documents Land in Biden Staff’s Inbox
In a striking revelation, U.S. intelligence agencies reported that Iranian hackers sent sensitive information stolen from the Trump campaign to individuals affiliated with President Joe Biden’s campaign earlier this summer. The emails, dispatched in June and July, contained excerpts of non-public material from Trump’s team, according to a joint statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and CISA.
The Iranian operatives have reportedly attempted to leak this sensitive Trump campaign material to various media outlets since June, raising alarms about the ongoing foreign interference in U.S. elections.
This latest disclosure highlights Iran’s aggressive tactics to undermine Trump’s campaign, following earlier attempts to leak stolen documents that surfaced in August. While it remains unclear whether the Biden campaign utilized the information sent by Iran, campaign staff members did not respond to the unsolicited emails.
Morgan Finkelstein, spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, stated that they have cooperated with law enforcement since learning of the incident.
“We condemn in the strongest terms any effort by foreign actors to interfere in U.S. elections,”
Finkelstein said, describing the communications as spam or phishing attempts targeting personal emails.
Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt criticized the Biden team, asserting that the incident is evidence of Iranian interference aimed at benefiting Biden and Harris.
“Kamala and Biden must come clean about whether they used the hacked material against President Trump,” she urged.
During a rally in New York, Trump addressed the situation, acknowledging the hack but expressing uncertainty about the content sent to Biden’s campaign. “I’d like to find out what they found,” he remarked.
The FBI is actively monitoring these hacking attempts and is in contact with affected parties as part of a broader investigation. Federal authorities emphasize that Iran, along with Russia and China, views U.S. elections as prime opportunities to exploit societal divisions for their own gain.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco underscored the seriousness of the threat posed by Iran during remarks at the Aspen Cyber Summit, stating,
“We are not underestimating the lengths to which Iran will go to influence this campaign.”
