Umuahia, Nigeria – A Labour Party meeting in Abia State was disrupted on Sunday when over 20 masked men stormed the venue and ordered members to remain silent.
Five of the masked individuals approached the high table and declared that the Secretary of the Labour Party Local Government Election Committee, Prince G.O. Ndubueze, was under arrest.
However, party members resisted the attempt to detain Ndubueze, demanding a warrant of arrest, which the masked men failed to present. In protest, over 500 Labour Party members accompanied Ndubueze to the Aba Area Police Command.
In an interview with Newsmen, Ndubueze expressed his refusal to be intimidated, accusing Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, of attempting to impose chairmanship and councillorship candidates in the upcoming November 2 local government election.
“I didn’t receive any warrant of arrest, and I’m not even certain if these individuals are police officers. However, as a law-abiding citizen, I will cooperate with the police. But I will never submit to intimidation from Governor Alex Otti. We will not allow him to impose candidates in this local government election,” Ndubueze stated.
He further criticized Governor Otti, who was elected through a democratic process, for allegedly trying to impose candidates on the party. “The Labour Party in Abia State will not tolerate such impositions,” he added.
