Anugbum Onuoha was a former Special Adviser on Lands to Wike during his tenure as Rivers state governor
Abuja, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate removal of Anugbum Onuoha, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo State, citing his alleged closeness to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
At a press conference on Thursday, PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum condemned Onuoha’s appointment, stating that he is Wike’s cousin and former Special Adviser on Lands.
The PDP also demanded the redeployment of Edo Commissioner of Police, CP Nemi Edwin-Iwo, alleging that he is aligned with Wike and has been behaving arbitrarily in the run-up to the election.
Damagum accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of resorting to violence and manipulation to intimidate voters, citing reports of arbitrary arrests and detentions of PDP members and supporters.
He warned that the APC’s actions could instill fear in the people of Edo State and compromise the integrity of the election.
The PDP demanded:
- Immediate redeployment of CP Nemi Edwin-Iwo.
- Release of detained PDP members.
- Non-interference in Edo State Security Corps activities.
- Removal of Anugbum Onuoha as Edo INEC REC.
Damagum expressed concerns that the appointments could compromise the election’s integrity, citing the 2023 Adamawa State Governorship election as an example.
He confidently projected a sweeping victory for the PDP candidate, Ighodalo, citing widespread support and his Prosperity for All Manifesto.
The development comes amid rising tensions in Edo State, with concerns over election manipulation and violence.
The PDP has vowed to resist any attempts to compromise the election, warning the APC and compromised police operatives that they have pushed the people of Edo State to their breaking point.
