Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened as the State House of Assembly has formally accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, of misconduct. A notice detailing the allegations was submitted to Speaker Martin Amaewhule on Monday by 26 lawmakers.
Citing Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and other legal provisions, the legislators listed several infractions allegedly committed by the governor. Among the accusations are unauthorized and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds, interference in the legislative process, and making appointments without due legislative approval.
Additionally, the Assembly accused Fubara of withholding salaries and allowances meant for legislators and other Assembly staff, including the Clerk, Emeka Amadi. The lawmakers also charged Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu with supporting the alleged illegal appointments.
Following the receipt of the notice, Speaker Amaewhule formally communicated the allegations to Governor Fubara. He referenced Section 188(3) of the Constitution, which mandates the Assembly to decide within 14 days—without debate—whether the allegations warrant further investigation.
In his statement, Amaewhule urged the governor to respond to the claims and act in accordance with the law, while extending his regards. The development marks another chapter in the ongoing political tension in Rivers State, raising concerns over the stability of governance in the region.
