RSIEC Office Under Lock and Key, LG Election Uncertain

Port Harcourt, Nigeria — The upcoming local government elections in Rivers State, scheduled for October 5, 2024, have been thrown into uncertainty following the sealing of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office by the state police command.

The closure of the RSIEC premises comes in the wake of a Federal High Court ruling that ordered the suspension of all electoral activities in the state. The court’s injunction further directed security agencies to refrain from providing any support or involvement in the election process slated for that date.

Eyewitnesses reported a heavy police presence around the RSIEC offices, with officers stationed at various points to prevent any form of activity. Images from the scene show the premises fully secured, indicating strict compliance with the court order.

The recent developments cast doubt on the feasibility of holding the elections as planned. The state government and RSIEC are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
