Tim Walz Agrees, JD Vance Fully Commited

A potential vice presidential debate is gaining traction as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed on Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter) that he would participate in a debate hosted by CBS News on October 1 in New York City. His opponent, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), is also fully commited, stating in an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that he “strongly” believes he will attend but needs to review the moderators and rules first.

CBS News had previously proposed four debate dates: September 17, September 24, October 1, and October 8. Walz’s agreement marks the first official commitment to any of these dates.

This debate is set against the backdrop of a tumultuous 2024 presidential race, which saw a major shakeup when President Joe Biden dropped out in July, leading to Vice President Kamala Harris stepping in as the Democratic nominee. Before Vance was confirmed as Donald Trump’s running mate, Harris had already agreed to a debate in the summer, though those dates have since passed.

A Harris campaign official confirmed the October 1 date, adding that Walz is eager to debate Vance — if Vance decides to participate. Both candidates have expressed enthusiasm for a debate, but Vance has been more cautious about committing.

Walz took a jab at Vance during his public introduction as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, saying, “I can’t wait to debate the guy — that is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.”

Vance, in turn, responded to Walz’s defense of his military service against Republican attacks, hinting that the topic would be discussed further in a debate.

As the clock ticks down, the political world waits to see if the vice presidential debate will indeed take place. Meanwhile, Trump and Harris are set to debate on September 10, in what is expected to be a high-stakes event.
