UNICEF Calls for Urgent Support as Over 170 Arrested in Widespread Child Sexual Abuse Scandal at Malaysian Care Homes
Malaysian authorities carried out large-scale raids on several care homes across two states, rescuing hundreds of children and teens from conditions of shocking child abuse. These raids revealed an alarming pattern of physical and sexual abuse inflicted upon vulnerable children by the very people entrusted with their care.
According to initial investigations, caretakers not only abused the children but also coerced them into harming other children. Over 170 individuals were arrested, including Islamic religious teachers and caretakers.
This case has drawn significant attention from international organizations. Robert Gass, the representative for UNICEF Malaysia, expressed deep concern, stating,
“These children have experienced unimaginable horrors and will need long-term professional medical and psychosocial support.”
The care homes were reportedly run by Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB), a business organization with alleged ties to the banned Islamic sect, Al-Arqam. Al-Arqam was outlawed by Malaysian authorities in 1994 due to its extremist practices. However, GISB has denied managing the homes or being involved in any wrongdoing. “It is not our policy to do things that go against Islam and the laws,” the organization stated.
This case highlights the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and the need for strict oversight in care institutions. The rescued children are currently being housed at a police training center in Kuala Lumpur, where they will receive temporary care as investigations continue.
This tragic incident raises questions about the effectiveness of monitoring and regulation of care facilities in Malaysia, especially those affiliated with private organizations. It also stresses the need for stronger child protection laws to prevent similar cases of abuse in the future.
