Rivers State Political Officeholders Suspended by Sole Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas
Ibok-Ete Ibas, the newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers State, has suspended all political officeholders in the region. This decision, announced on Wednesday through a statement signed by the chief of staff to the administrator, is effective immediately.
The suspension notably impacts officials appointed by the ousted Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Among those affected are the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the Chief of Staff, commissioners, as well as chairpersons and members of various boards, agencies, and parastatals. Additionally, the suspension extends to special advisers, special assistants, and senior special assistants.
The action follows a mandate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, granting the Rivers State Administrator the authority to implement such measures. The official announcement, titled “The Rivers State Government Announces the Suspension of Political Office Holders and Appointees in Rivers State,” highlights the immediate nature of the suspension.
As part of the transition process, the affected officials are instructed to hand over their responsibilities to the permanent secretaries within their respective ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). In instances where a permanent secretary is unavailable, they are to pass on their duties to the most senior director or the head of administration.
Vice-Admiral Ibok Ibas assumed his role just last week, following President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. This critical announcement, made during a national broadcast the previous Tuesday, also resulted in the suspension of Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The state of emergency is set to last for an initial period of six months.
