Rivers State Government Strengthens Nigerian Navy’s Maritime Security with New Gunboat Donation to Combat sea piracy
Rivers State – Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called upon the Nigerian Navy to effectively utilize six newly acquired gunboats for the protection of oil installations and the combat of sea piracy. This initiative aims to enhance the safety of the region’s waterways, which are vital to Nigeria’s economy, heavily reliant on crude oil production and sales.
The governor made these remarks during a presentation ceremony held at the NNS Pathfinder in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, where he officially handed over the 400 horsepower security surveillance gunboats, along with three housing units designated for senior officers and crew accommodation. The event was attended by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, who received the donation on behalf of the Nigerian Navy.
Fubara emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration among security agencies, stating that addressing issues such as crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, sea piracy and pipeline vandalism is crucial for both state and national economic growth. He highlighted the significant challenges posed by these crimes, particularly in the Niger Delta, and underscored the obligation of any government to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens.
He expressed his commitment to supporting the Nigerian Navy in its efforts. “Today, I am proud to announce this donation of gunboats as a demonstration of my dedication to combating oil theft and piracy,” Fubara stated. “It is the duty of our government to ensure a secure environment for all.”
The governor acknowledged the pressing issue of kidnapping and piracy affecting both Bonny and Kalabari waterways, urging the Navy to utilize the new resources to enhance security for residents and travelers alike. “These gunboats are not just an addition to your fleet; they are a tool to make our waterways safer,” he urged.
In his address, Vice Admiral Ogalla recognized the partnership forged between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Navy. He affirmed that the donation significantly reinforces the Navy’s capacity to operate effectively within the maritime domain, adding, “This support from Governor Fubara will greatly enhance our operational abilities to maintain security in Rivers State and the larger Niger Delta region.”
Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder, echoed the sentiments of appreciation, stating that the donated gunboats and housing facilities attest to the governor’s unwavering support for the Navy, promising that they would significantly improve operational capabilities.
Irene Lenu Nwidobie, General Manager of Abitto Global Services, the company responsible for constructing the gunboats, expressed gratitude to Fubara for entrusting them with this crucial project, emphasizing the suitability of the boats for the challenging maritime terrain of Rivers State.
As the Rivers State Government continues to prioritize the protection of its natural resources and waterways, this partnership with the Nigerian Navy marks a proactive step towards ensuring safer seas and enhancing national security efforts against maritime crime.
