Rivers State University Set to Honor Record-Breaking Graduating Class at 36th Convocation

Rivers State University has announced that it will award First Class Degrees to 120 outstanding students during its 36th convocation ceremony, taking place this weekend. This event marks a significant milestone as it celebrates not only the graduation of the institution’s first cohort of Nursing graduates but also a total of 8,920 students.

During a pre-convocation press conference held at his office in Port Harcourt on Monday, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nlerum Okogbule revealed the exciting details. “This year’s convocation is particularly special,” he stated, “as it will be my final ceremony presiding over the event as Vice Chancellor, with my five-year tenure concluding on March 4, 2025. Furthermore, we are proud to celebrate the graduation of our first set of Nursing graduates, who were recently inducted as professional nurses by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. This is not only a remarkable achievement for the university but also for the Rivers State Government, which has been a key supporter of our Medical College.”

Additionally, he pointed out that the convocation precedes another groundbreaking event—the graduation and induction of the first cohort of medical doctors from the university, set for January 2025, as recognized by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor outlined the structure of the ceremony, stating that the convocation will feature the awarding of Higher and Bachelor’s Degrees as well as Postgraduate Diplomas to deserving students. “Bachelor’s Degrees will be conferred on Friday, December 13, 2024, while Higher Degrees will be awarded on Saturday, December 14, 2024.” This arrangement is intended to alleviate overcrowding and streamline the overall duration of the convocation activities.

In addition, a noteworthy convocation lecture will take place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, delivered by distinguished Nigerian academic Prof. Lawal Suleiman, former Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University. The lecture is titled “Emerging Technologies in Reshaping the Future of Education and Learning Environment.”

In terms of graduating statistics, a total of 8,920 students will be honored during this convocation. The breakdown includes 120 students receiving First Class Degrees, 1,962 obtaining Second Class Honours Upper Division, 4,017 with Second Class Honours Lower Division, 757 earning Third Class Degrees, and 58 students presented with Pass Degrees, summing up to 6,708 undergraduate students. For Higher Degrees, there will be 743 graduates of Postgraduate Diplomas, 1,195 students earning Master’s Degrees, and 442 completing their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, totaling 2,212 postgraduate graduates. In total, the university will celebrate the achievement of 8,920 students.

Rivers State university’s Prof. Okogbule expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for continuous support to the institution, which has significantly contributed to its growth and advancement.
