“What the enemy brought to our land has now returned to its home.” – Zelensky
In a video address marking Ukraine’s Independence Day, President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Russia’s attempt to “destroy” Ukraine had failed, as the war has now “returned to its home.” Zelensky’s speech, delivered from a location near where Ukrainian forces recently launched a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, emphasized the resilience of his nation as it celebrates 33 years of independence from the Soviet Union amidst ongoing conflict.
The video, recorded in a remote, wooded area in the Sumy region, highlighted Zelensky’s visit to the site earlier in the week. He noted that the location was just a “few kilometres” from where Ukrainian forces made their unexpected advance into Russian territory on August 6, a move that sent shockwaves around the world.
Zelensky asserted that Russia’s 2022 invasion, intended to obliterate Ukraine, had backfired. “Today, we celebrate the 33rd Independence Day of Ukraine,” he said. “What the enemy brought to our land has now returned to its home.” He warned that those who attempt to inflict harm on Ukraine would face consequences on their own soil, framing it not as an act of revenge, but as an inevitable form of justice.
In a direct rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky referred to him as a “sick old man from Red Square who constantly threatens everyone with the red button,” alluding to Russia’s nuclear arsenal.
While Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region has unsettled Moscow, it has not significantly slowed Russia’s advance in eastern Ukraine. However, Zelensky’s message was clear: Ukraine continues to resist and retaliate against the aggression that sought to erase its sovereignty.
