Okene, Nigeria – The lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has urged Nigerians to hold Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo, and former Governor Yahaya Bello accountable should any harm come to her or her supporters.
Akpoti-Uduaghan made this assertion in a post on her official Facebook page on Tuesday, just hours before her planned homecoming visit to her constituency for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
Addressing her constituents, she expressed her commitment to a peaceful celebration but warned of potential disruptions. “My dear people of Kogi Central, I look forward to our peaceful Sallah celebrations today. However, should we be met with or infiltrated by violence, Nigerians should hold Gov Òdodo, Yahaya Bello & SP Godswill Akpabio wholly responsible,” she stated.
Her statement follows speculations regarding the possible cancellation of her visit, which she dismissed, affirming her constitutional duty to engage with her constituents. Encouraging her supporters to turn out en masse, she reiterated that the event would proceed as scheduled despite recent restrictions imposed by the state government.
On Monday, the Kogi State Government announced a ban on rallies and public gatherings, citing security concerns. The directive also prohibited fishing activities, linking them to recent violent incidents that resulted in fatalities in Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette within Kogi Local Government Area. Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, defended the decision as a preventive measure against potential security breaches.
Similarly, the Kogi State Police Command advised Natasha-Uduaghan to cancel the planned rally, citing the state government’s prohibition on political gatherings. Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye emphasized the need to uphold security and public order.
Despite these warnings, social media footage has emerged showing preparations for the senator’s homecoming. A live video shared by Senator Bashir Haroon captured a large crowd, predominantly women, singing and drumming in anticipation of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return.
As of the time of this report, the situation remains fluid, with heightened political tension in the state.
