Sri Lanka Introduces new visa Requirement: E-Visa Suspended, Nigerians Exempted

Sri Lanka's Introduces new visa Requirement: E-Visa Suspended, Nigerians Exempted

In a sudden move, the Sri Lankan government has announced that it is temporarily suspending its electronic visa (e-Visa) system, effective August 2, 2024.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka issued an interim injunction order, invalidating the Cabinet’s decision to delegate the management of the e-visa service to foreign companies.

The suspension of the e-Visa system means that tourists from most countries will now need to apply for a visa on arrival at Sri Lankan airports. However, Nigerian nationals will need to submit their visa applications through a representative at the Department of Immigration’s headquarters, as they cannot obtain a visa upon arrival.

The e-Visa system was introduced in April 2024, replacing the electronic travel authorization (ETA) system. However, the new system has been marred by allegations of procedural violations, corruption, and breaches of public trust during the contracting process. The Supreme Court’s suspension aims to address these concerns and restore transparency.

VFS Global, the company managing the e-Visa system, has confirmed that the website has been taken offline and that applicants who submitted their applications after the suspension will receive refunds. The company has also stated that applicants whose visa applications are under process will receive a refund if they applied on August 2 after 17:00 hours Sri Lanka Standard Time.

Sri Lanka ETA portal reinstated

In related news, the Supreme Court has also ordered the reinstatement of the previously used ETA portal, which was operated by Mobitel, a Sri Lankan telecommunications company. The ETA system is expected to be operational again within the next week, according to the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO).

The suspension of the e-Visa system is expected to remain in place until the court rules on the petition. The Ministry of Public Security is currently working with officials from the Department of Immigration and Emigration to resolve the situation swiftly.

Travelers planning to visit Sri Lanka are advised to check the latest requirements and regulations before traveling.
