South-South Governors Urge Reversal of Emergency Rule in Rivers State
While acknowledging the president’s constitutional role in maintaining national security, the governors argued that the situation in Rivers State does not meet the necessary conditions outlined in Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution for an emergency rule.

Yenagoa, Nigeria – The South-South Governors’ Forum has called for the immediate reversal of the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement released on Thursday, the forum, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, emphasized that withdrawing the emergency declaration would help defuse tensions and create an environment for lasting peace.

“To reduce tensions and establish a foundation for enduring peace, we propose the rescission of the state of emergency,” the statement read.

The governors stressed the need for dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and urged all stakeholders to maintain peace while adhering to constitutional principles.

“The time for dialogue is now,” the forum stated, adding, “We encourage all parties to remain calm, uphold peace, and respect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

While acknowledging the president’s constitutional role in maintaining national security, the governors argued that the situation in Rivers State does not meet the necessary conditions outlined in Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution for an emergency rule.

They pointed out that the constitution provides clear procedures for removing a governor, deputy governor, and members of the state legislature, which should be followed instead of relying on executive intervention.

“We believe that the political disputes in Rivers State between the governor and the House of Assembly should, ideally, be resolved through legal and constitutional means, rather than by executive fiat,” the forum stated.

The governors reaffirmed their commitment to securing peace and stability in their respective states and called for a resolution of the crisis through lawful and democratic processes.
