Taiwan Kindergarten Teacher Sentenced to 28 Years for Over 200 Child Sex Offenses
A kindergarten teacher in Taiwan has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for committing over 200 sexual offenses against children, sparking widespread outrage across the island. The Taipei District Court convicted the man, identified as Mao, for crimes described as “vicious,” leaving six children under the age of seven with “severe physical and mental trauma.”
The case, which has captured national attention, raised significant public anger over the scale of Mao’s crimes and the initial handling by authorities. Criticism has been particularly fierce as Mao was not suspended after the first report in 2022, potentially leading to more victims.
Mao was finally arrested in July 2023 after additional complaints from parents emerged. Investigations revealed that he had been working at a private kindergarten in Taipei since September 2021, where he managed CCTV, assisted with teaching, and supervised children.
Despite early warnings and an investigation in 2022 that found no evidence, Mao continued his employment until further complaints led to a police investigation. Authorities eventually uncovered over 600 incriminating videos on his phone. The kindergarten’s license has since been revoked, and Mao was barred from teaching.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an issued a public apology in July for the mishandling of the case. Investigations into additional allegations are ongoing.
