Protesters Clash with Rivers State Police During #Take-It-Back Demonstration
Port Harcourt, Rivers State – The #Take-It-Back protest escalated into chaos on 7th April when members of the Rivers State Police Command deployed tear gas in an effort to disperse demonstrators gathered at Isaac Boro Park.
Organized by the Take It Back Movement alongside various Civil Society Organisations and the Niger Delta Congress, the protest initially drew a crowd at the park. However, police officers instructed the participants to relocate to a different venue, which the protesters refused to comply with.
Undeterred, the protesters began chanting solidarity songs and commenced a march through the park before advancing towards the bustling Aba Express Road. Upon reaching the CFC junction, they were confronted once more by heavily armed anti-riot police, who reiterated their order to clear the street. The protesters once again stood their ground.
In response, the police deployed tear gas canisters, causing confusion and panic as participants scattered in search of safety. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between law enforcement and activist groups in the region.
