Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu is set to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit, five days after returning from the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
The Joint Arab-Islamic Summit in Saudi Arabia, hosted by King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, addressed key Middle Eastern issues and concluded on Monday. Now, President Tinubu’s upcoming journey to Brazil is at the invitation of Brazilian President and current G20 chair, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
According to Onanuga, the G20 Summit, scheduled for November 18-19, will gather leaders from the world’s 20 largest economies, along with the European Union, the African Union, and various global financial institutions. This year’s theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will steer discussions on critical topics such as the fight against poverty and hunger, reforms in global governance, sustainable development, and energy transition.
Nigeria has consistently advocated for the reform of global governance institutions and has highlighted its qualifications for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. During the summit, Tinubu is expected to continue pushing for these reforms and engage in bilateral meetings to promote Nigeria’s socio-economic initiatives.
President Tinubu will be accompanied by a delegation that includes Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity Hannatu Musawa, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, and Director General of the National Intelligence Agency Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
The President will return to Nigeria following the conclusion of the summit.
