Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have approved the scrapping of the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development.

The decision was made during the FEC meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja, as announced by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, via his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The Ministry of Niger Delta will now be replaced by a newly established Ministry of Regional Development. This new ministry will oversee various regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the North West Development Commission, the South West Development Commission, and the North East Development Commission.

In place of the Ministry of Sports Development, the National Sports Commission will be responsible for managing sports-related matters in the country.

Additionally, the FEC approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, reflecting the administration’s efforts to streamline governance.

While the restructuring has been announced, Onanuga did not specify the fate of the ministers who were heading the now-defunct ministries. The Ministry of Niger Delta was previously led by Abubakar Momoh, while John Enoh was in charge of the Ministry of Sports Development.
