The committee’s report is expected to determine the next steps in Olufemi Oluyede’s confirmation process.
Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The request was made in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The president’s request is in line with Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act. Tinubu commended Oluyede’s leadership skills, highlighting his professionalism and commitment to national security since assuming the role in an acting capacity.
“His qualifications, experience, and contributions make him well-suited for this vital role,” Tinubu stated. He also emphasized the need for continuity in the Nigerian Army’s leadership and urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process.
The Senate referred the request to its Committee on the Army, instructing it to screen the nominee and provide a report for further legislative consideration.
Lieutenant-General Oluyede has been serving as Acting Chief of Army Staff following the illness and subsequent death of the former COAS, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja. President Tinubu initially appointed Oluyede to the position in an acting capacity after Lagbaja fell ill.
The committee’s report is expected to determine the next steps in Oluyede’s confirmation process.
