92-Year-Old Man Charged with Murder and Rape in Decades-Old Cold Case
A 92-year-old man has been charged with the murder and rape of a woman in the UK nearly six decades after the crime took place, according to British police statements released on Wednesday.
Louisa Dunne, 75, was discovered deceased by a neighbor in her Bristol home in June 1967, with her death attributed to strangulation and asphyxiation.
After lying dormant for 57 years, the case saw a breakthrough when Ryland Headley, a nonagenarian from Ipswich in eastern England, was arrested on Tuesday and subsequently charged with these serious offenses. The arrest followed a comprehensive review of the case by Avon and Somerset police, which included a fresh forensic examination of evidence linked to the incident.
Detective Inspector Dave Marchant of the police force described the latest development as a “hugely significant moment” in the ongoing investigation. He confirmed that Louisa’s family has been updated about the charges and emphasized that a specialist liaison officer will continue to provide support to them in the future.
Headley made a court appearance in Bristol via video link on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody. During the hearing, no plea was entered for the two charges.
