Leicester, UK – Four Nigerian students studying in the United Kingdom have been sentenced to prison for their roles in a brutal street fight involving knives.

The violent incident took place on November 4, 2021, on New Park Street in Leicester, leaving one person with multiple stab wounds.

Leicester City Police launched an extensive investigation, using CCTV footage, phone data, and tips from the public to identify the suspects. Following a six-week trial that concluded in October 2023, sentences were handed down on November 14.

The convicted Nigerian students—Destiny Ojo, Habib Lawal, Ridwanulahi Raheem, and Joshua Davies-Ero—are all in their early 20s. They received prison terms ranging from two to seven years for various charges related to the incident.

Destiny Ojo was given the harshest sentence of seven years for violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH), and GBH with intent. Habib Lawal received a five-year sentence on similar charges. Ridwanulahi Raheem was sentenced to three years for violent disorder and possession of a bladed weapon, while Joshua Davies-Ero was handed a two-year sentence for violent disorder.

A fifth defendant, 22-year-old Justin Asamoah, admitted to possessing a bladed article and is due to be sentenced on November 22.

Leicester Police praised the public’s involvement in aiding the investigation. Detective Constable Sean Downey emphasized the severity of the incident, stating, “This case highlights the grave dangers of violent disorder. It is fortunate that the injuries were not more severe or fatal, which could have turned this into a far graver investigation.”

Downey reiterated the force’s commitment to public safety, saying, “We will not tolerate violent behaviour in our communities and will continue to take decisive action against offenders.”

The detailed sentencing report was published on the Leicester Police website last Thursday.
