The Senate of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has appointed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, a renowned scholar in International Law and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The announcement was made by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of the Directorate of Information and University Relations, on Thursday.

The decision came during a valedictory Senate meeting held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the university’s main campus. Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, stated that Maikudi’s appointment is in a temporary capacity, effective after his tenure concludes on June 30, 2024.

Her role as acting Vice-Chancellor will be pending ratification by the Governing Council.

Na’Allah, who served as Vice-Chancellor for five years, is credited with significant transformative leadership at the university.

In her acceptance speech, Professor Maikudi expressed gratitude to the Senate for their confidence in her. “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and unwavering commitment that you have accorded me,” she said.

Born on January 31, 1983, Professor Maikudi is the youngest female professor of law in Northwestern Nigeria and at the University of Abuja. She completed her secondary education at Queens College, Lagos, earning her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Maikudi obtained her LLB from the University of Reading in 2004, an LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005, and a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja in 2015. She joined the University of Abuja as Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, and rose to the rank of professor in 2022.

In 2018, she became the first female Deputy Dean at the university’s Faculty of Law and was later appointed as the pioneer director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.

Professor Maikudi has participated in numerous national and international conferences across the UK, US, South Africa, Germany, Italy, and Egypt. She has conducted extensive research on United Nations Law and has published widely in the field. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
