Vandalism Causes Prolonged Blackout In Bayelsa State

Yenagoa, Nigeria – Bayelsa State is facing an extended power outage after vandals destroyed 13 transmission towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV Double Circuit transmission line, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The incident, discovered on August 12, 2024, has left nine towers completely collapsed and four on the verge of collapse, affecting power supply to the entire state and some communities in Rivers State.

The Ahoada-Yenagoa transmission line is critical for transporting electricity from the Ahoada Transmission Substation to the Yenagoa Substation, which serves Bayelsa State.

TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stated that restoring power could take several months due to the severity of the damage and ongoing repairs to previously vandalized towers.

This incident comes shortly after TCN began repairing towers damaged in a similar incident on July 29, 2024.

TCN has awarded a contract for the reinforcement of towers 19 to 31 along the Ahoada-Yenagoa line, where tower members had been stolen.

The company has urged security operatives, host communities, traditional rulers, state governments, and all stakeholders to collaborate in the fight against the vandalism of power infrastructure.
