Vandals Attack Power Transmission Towers, Leave Maiduguri in Darkness

Minister of Power Lists Key Factors Limiting Sector's Growth

Maiduguri and its environs have been plunged into darkness after vandals attacked two power transmission towers along the Damaturu-Maiduguri 330kV Single Circuit Transmission Line.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.

According to TCN, towers T193 and T194 were destroyed using explosive devices, causing the 150MVA power transformer at Molai Substation to trip. The company suspects the attack occurred around 10:15pm on Tuesday night.

This is not the first time vandals have targeted these towers. On December 28, 2023, towers T193, T194, and T195 were destroyed using similar improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Two of the towers rebuilt after the incident were again targeted in this latest attack.

TCN is assessing the situation to determine the best approach for temporary restoration of power supply while a contractor is mobilized to rebuild the damaged towers. The company is urging the government and Nigerians to join in the fight against the destruction of national assets.

The attack has left Maiduguri and its environs without electricity, and TCN is working to restore power as soon as possible.
