Shiveluch Volcano Erupts In Russia After 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake

A major volcanic eruption has followed a 7.0-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s east coast, with the Shiveluch volcano spewing ash up to 5 miles into the sky, state-run media reported. The eruption has unleashed a substantial lava flow, though no injuries have been reported.

The Shiveluch volcano is located approximately 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of around 180,000 residents in Kamchatka’s eastern region. The US Geological Survey (USGS) identified the quake’s epicenter as about 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with a depth of 30 miles.

Despite the dramatic volcanic activity, TASS noted that the earthquake caused no “major damage,” although inspections are underway to assess any potential impact on buildings, particularly public facilities.
