The Warri Refinery, located in Ekpan, Uwvie, and Ubeji areas of Warri, is equipped to produce 13,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTA) of polypropylene and 18,000 MTA of carbon black. Commissioned in 1978, the facility was built to supply markets in Nigeria’s southern and southwestern regions.
Warri, Nigeria – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the resumption of operations at the 125,000-barrel-per-day Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company (WRPC) in Warri, Delta State.
This development comes just weeks after the Port Harcourt Refinery, with a 60,000-barrel-per-day capacity, resumed operations.
The update was disclosed on Monday by NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, during a tour of the Warri refinery. The tour, which included the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, provided an opportunity to assess the progress of ongoing repairs at the facility.
Kyari, addressing the team before the inspection, noted that while the repairs on the refinery were not fully complete, the facility had already commenced operations. “This plant is running. Although it is not 100 per cent complete, we are still in the process. Many people think these things are not real. We want you to see that this is real,” he stated.

Initially, the NNPCL had projected the mechanical completion of the Warri Refinery by the first quarter of 2024. However, the resumption of operations indicates significant progress ahead of schedule.
The WRPC is one of Nigeria’s four refineries, alongside the old and new Port Harcourt Refining Companies in Rivers State and the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company in Kaduna State.
For further details, Kyari emphasized the transparency of the rehabilitation process, inviting Nigerians to witness the ongoing work and results.
