Women from Isiama Afara Ukwu, the hometown of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, staged a peaceful protest on today demanding his immediate release from custody.
The protesters, carrying Kanu’s portraits and singing protest songs, called for his release from the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been detained since June 2021.
The protest comes as the South-East Governors Forum plans to meet with President Bola Tinubu to negotiate Kanu’s release. Similarly, the Labour Party caucus in the South-East Houses of Assembly has advocated for Kanu’s release, arguing it would reduce insecurity in the region.
Over 50 federal lawmakers from various parties and regions have also written to President Tinubu, appealing for Kanu’s release under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
The lawmakers believe Kanu’s release would significantly contribute to restoring peace in the South-East region.
