Amid High Waves and Weather Warnings, Rescuers Race Against Time to Find 17 Missing Passengers from Sunken Tourist Yacht

At least 17 people are missing after a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea, despite warnings of rough seas. Egyptian authorities confirmed the incident on Monday, with rescue efforts ongoing.

Rescue Mission Saves 28

The governor of the Red Sea region, Amr Hanafy, reported that 28 passengers were rescued near Marsa Alam, with some requiring airlifts for medical treatment. The yacht, carrying 31 tourists from various countries and 14 crew members, had set out on a five-day voyage before disaster struck.

Early Morning Distress Call

Authorities received a distress signal from the vessel, Sea Story, just before dawn. The yacht, a four-deck, wooden-hulled motorboat built in 2022, was operated by Dive Pro Liveaboard based in Hurghada. Efforts to contact the company for comments were met with no detailed responses.

Warnings Ignored?

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority had issued alerts about high waves and turbulent weather over the weekend, urging vessels to avoid maritime activity on Sunday and Monday. It remains unclear what led to the yacht’s sinking.

Military Leads Search Efforts

Egyptian military units have joined local rescue teams in the search for the missing individuals. Meanwhile, travel agencies in the region have reportedly scaled back Red Sea tours due to safety concerns linked to turbulent seas and regional instability.

Further updates are awaited as the rescue operation continues.
