Apple Faces Privacy Controversy as Siri Eavesdropping Allegations Lead to $95M Settlement Proposal
Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit accusing its virtual assistant, Siri, of secretly recording conversations and sharing the data with advertisers. The legal battle, which spans over five years, highlights claims that Apple compromised user privacy despite its public stance as a champion of digital rights.
Siri Accused of Unwanted Eavesdropping
Filed in an Oakland, California federal court, the lawsuit alleges that Siri was activated without user consent, recording conversations even without the “Hey, Siri” trigger phrase. These recordings were reportedly shared with advertisers, aiming to tailor ads to users’ preferences—a move that plaintiffs argue undermines Apple’s long-standing commitment to privacy.
Settlement Details
While Apple denies any wrongdoing, the proposed settlement, still awaiting approval by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, could see tens of millions of eligible Apple device users receiving compensation. Owners of Siri-enabled devices between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2023, could claim up to $20 per device, capped at five devices per consumer.
A hearing to finalize the settlement terms is scheduled for February 14, 2025. Estimates suggest only 3% to 5% of eligible users will file claims.
Privacy Crusade Under Scrutiny
The allegations starkly contrast with Apple CEO Tim Cook’s repeated assertions that privacy is a “fundamental human right.” This lawsuit could challenge the credibility of Apple’s privacy-first branding.
Lawyers Could Pocket $29.6M
Attorneys representing consumers plan to request nearly $30 million of the settlement fund for fees and expenses. For Apple, the $95 million settlement represents a minuscule fraction of the $705 billion in profits it has earned since 2014.
Impact on Consumers
While the settlement is a financial drop in the bucket for Apple, it reignites discussions about the tech industry’s accountability in protecting consumer data. The case serves as a reminder for users to remain vigilant about digital privacy in an increasingly connected world.
Eligible consumers can expect instructions on how to file claims once the settlement receives court approval.
