In a significant development, Bangladesh’s Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, has announced plans to establish an inclusive interim government following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman disclosed that after extensive consultations with all major political parties, a consensus was reached to form a transitional government aimed at restoring stability. He stated,
“After holding a fruitful discussion with all political parties, we have decided to form an interim government. We will speak with President Mohammed Shahabuddin now to resolve the situation”
The General emphasized the importance of halting all violence, pledging that the new government would ensure justice for those who lost their lives during the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement. In his address, he called for immediate peace and reconciliation.
As part of efforts to end ongoing student protests, Professor Asif Nazrul from Dhaka University’s Law Department has been requested to issue a statement urging students to cease their demonstrations.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her position and left the country. Notably, no representatives from the Awami League attended the meeting with political parties held at the army headquarters.General Waker-Uz-Zaman is now set to hold discussions with President Mohammed Shahabuddin to finalize the arrangements for the interim government and bring a resolution to the current political crisis.
