Joe Biden has tested positive for Covid-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms, the White House announced on Wednesday.
The 81-year-old US president, who is vaccinated and boosted, has previously tested positive for Covid twice.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Biden’s condition, stating that he plans to isolate at his home in Delaware while continuing to carry out his duties. Biden’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, reported that the president has upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose and a cough, and has started his first dose of Paxlovid.
Earlier in the day, Biden was seen visiting supporters in Las Vegas and delivering a speech. However, he had to cancel a subsequent campaign event after testing positive. In a tweet, Biden thanked everyone for their well-wishes and assured that he would continue to work for the American people while in recovery.
Reports indicate that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have expressed concerns to Joe Biden about his candidacy’s potential impact on upcoming House and Senate races. This follows growing pressure from within the Democratic Party for Biden to step aside due to his age and recent performance in a debate against Donald Trump.
Notably, Congressman Adam Schiff has publicly urged Biden to “pass the torch,” citing doubts about the president’s ability to win against Trump. Schiff praised Biden’s leadership but emphasized the need for a new Democratic candidate.
Biden’s latest Covid diagnosis comes amid efforts to bolster his appeal among Hispanic voters, where his support has waned since 2020. His recent campaign activities included visiting a Mexican restaurant in Las Vegas and addressing a national civil rights group.
Despite these efforts, Biden’s campaign faces significant turbulence. He was forced to cancel a speech at UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights organization, and his trip to Nevada was abruptly cut short.
In a recent interview with BET, Biden stated he would consider stepping down if advised by his doctors, but emphasized his commitment to running as long as the country remains divided.
As the president isolates and recovers, the Democratic Party grapples with internal debates over its future leadership and strategy for the upcoming election.
