Gang violence escalates in Haiti as elderly residents of Cité Soleil are accused of witchcraft and brutally massacred.
At least 110 elderly residents of Cité Soleil, a poverty-stricken slum in Haiti, were brutally killed over the weekend following accusations of witchcraft, according to the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH).
The massacre was reportedly orchestrated by gang leader Monel “Mikano” Felix, head of the Wharf Jeremie gang and its Viv Ansanm faction. Felix targeted the elderly after a voudou priest claimed they had used witchcraft to harm his child, who had fallen ill.
RNDDH disclosed that gang members executed the victims, all aged over 60, using machetes and knives. The killings spanned two days, with 60 people murdered on Friday and another 50 on Saturday.
Cité Soleil, located near the port of Port-au-Prince, is one of Haiti’s poorest and most dangerous areas. Gang dominance in the slum, including restrictions on mobile phone usage, severely hampered residents’ ability to report the massacre in real-time.
Felix, a notorious figure in Haiti’s gang landscape, has been banned from entering the neighboring Dominican Republic since 2022.
This tragic event highlights the escalating violence and deep-rooted socio-economic challenges facing Haiti, where gang rule often overrides law and order.
