California – In a major disruption, Meta’s key platforms—Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—experienced widespread outages, leaving millions of users unable to access their accounts or post content globally.
The issue, which began on Wednesday, has sparked a flood of complaints on social media, including X (formerly Twitter), where users confirmed the outage was affecting people worldwide.
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks service outages, the disruptions have been extensive. Reports logged include over 107,000 issues with Facebook and more than 71,000 problems with Instagram. Many users attempting to access Facebook were met with a message stating, “We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”
Meta Acknowledges the Issue
Reacting to the disruption, Meta addressed the issue on X, writing:
“We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”
Instagram and WhatsApp also posted updates. Instagram tweeted:
“Hi, we know there’s a technical issue impacting some people’s ability to access Instagram. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience.”
WhatsApp assured users, “We’re aware of some issues accessing WhatsApp. We’re actively working on a solution and starting to see a return to normal for most people. We expect things to be back to normal shortly.”
This incident follows several similar disruptions across Meta’s platforms this year, including a major outage in March.
As engineers work to resolve the issue, millions of users remain in limbo, waiting for services to be fully restored.
