Beloved Star of Downton Abbey and Harry Potter, Maggie Smith Leaves Behind a Legendary Legacy
Maggie Smith, the legendary British actress and two-time Oscar-winner, has passed away at the age of 89. Smith, known for her iconic roles in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films, died early Friday in a London hospital, her family confirmed.
Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, shared the news in a statement, expressing their deep grief: “She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”
Smith’s illustrious career spanned over six decades. She first captured the world’s attention with her Oscar-winning performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969. Nearly a decade later, she won another Academy Award for her role in California Suite.
Despite her many accolades, Smith found renewed fame with younger generations for her role as the sharp-witted Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series.
Often hailed as one of Britain’s greatest actresses, alongside the likes of Judi Dench and Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie‘s legacy will continue to inspire audiences worldwide.
