Putin Announces 30-Day Suspension of Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure Following Trump Call
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a temporary pause lasting 30 days on strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This announcement came after a conversation with United States President Donald Trump, as disclosed in an official statement released by the Kremlin.
The order is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions amid the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The Kremlin reported that Putin and Trump engaged in a “detailed and frank exchange of views” during their discussion.
However, Putin set forth several prerequisites for any potential advancement towards peace, including an immediate halt to conscription in Ukraine and the cessation of military rearmament by the Ukrainian armed forces, as stated by the Kremlin and reported by AFP. He also voiced concerns regarding the effective monitoring of any proposed ceasefire.
The proposal for the 30-day cessation of strikes on energy targets was made by Trump, to which Putin reportedly reacted positively by instructing the Russian military to implement the command without delay.
Alongside the pause in military action, both leaders reached an agreement to facilitate a prisoner exchange, with each country set to swap 175 detainees.
Additionally, Putin stressed that a long-term resolution to the conflict hinges on Western nations ceasing their military and intelligence support to Ukraine. The Kremlin emphasized that halting foreign aid to Kyiv is a crucial condition for preventing further escalation and for moving towards a political and diplomatic resolution to the ongoing war. “The key condition for preventing an escalation of the conflict and working towards its resolution through political and diplomatic means should be a complete cessation of foreign military assistance and the provision of intelligence to Kyiv,” the Kremlin stated.
