Russian Authorities Ban The Satanic Temple, Accusing It of Undermining Traditional Values and Supporting Extremism

The Russian government has banned The Satanic Temple, a US-based religious group known for using Satanic imagery to champion personal freedoms and secular values, labeling it an “undesirable” organization.

In a statement on Wednesday, Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office accused the group of promoting

“occult ideology” and using its symbolism to “discredit traditional spiritual and moral values.” The office also alleged that The Satanic Temple supports “extremist and terrorist movements,” spreads “destructive pseudo-theological ideas,”

and advocates violence, reportedly with backing from US government agencies.

Controversial Allegations

Russian authorities claimed the group’s website promotes anti-government sentiments, including calls for overthrowing the constitutional order and fundraising for Ukraine’s military. However, The Satanic Temple’s website only highlights its efforts to assist members in Ukraine fleeing the ongoing conflict, with no mention of military support.

A Global Advocacy Group

Founded in 2012 by Lucien Greaves and Malcolm Jerry, The religious group advocates for empathy, secularism, and personal liberties. The non-theistic organization, which distinguishes itself from the Church of Satan, aims to

“reject tyrannical authority” and “oppose injustice.” It boasts chapters across the US, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Finland, with Russia estimating its global membership at 10 million.

Crackdown on ‘Undesirables’

Russia’s designation compels The religious group to cease all activities within the country. Engaging with the group is now illegal under Russian law. This move adds The Satanic Temple to a growing list of over 190 banned organizations, including human rights groups like Memorial and media outlets like Novaya Gazeta Europe.

The Satanic Temple has yet to issue a response to the designation, which critics argue reflects an escalating crackdown on organizations advocating for freedom and secularism.
