Saudi Arabia Declares March 1 as Start of Ramadan Following Crescent Moon Sighting
Ramadan 2024 Begins on March 1 in Saudi Arabia as Crescent Moon is Sighted

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has officially announced that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, following the sighting of the crescent moon. This announcement marks the commencement of a sacred period during which more than 1.8 billion Muslims globally will engage in daily fasting from dawn to dusk.

Ramadan, recognized as the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is composed of 12 months and typically spans either 354 or 355 days in a year. Fasting during this month is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam and is mandatory for all healthy adult Muslims. Nevertheless, exceptions are made for certain individuals, including young children, those who are ill, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or experiencing menstruation.

For centuries, the practice of moon sighting has served as a traditional method for Muslims to determine the start of Ramadan as well as the two key Islamic festivals, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. In many countries, including Saudi Arabia, adjustments are often made to work and school schedules during this holy month to accommodate the unique fasting routines of the observant.
