Chelsea Owner Todd Boehly Expands Global Sports Empire with £40M Investment in The Hundred’s Trent Rockets
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has expanded his sports investment portfolio, securing a 49% stake in the Trent Rockets, a team in The Hundred cricket competition. The deal, worth just under £40 million, values the franchise at approximately £79 million.
Boehly’s investment comes through Cain International, the real estate firm he co-founded with British businessman Jonathan Goldstein. Nottinghamshire, the host county for the Rockets at Trent Bridge, will retain a controlling 51% stake.

Boehly, an American billionaire investor, is no stranger to high-profile sports deals. In 2022, he led a group of companies that acquired Premier League club Chelsea for £4.25 billion and took over as chairman. He also holds stakes in Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers, NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers, and other sports ventures through his conglomerate, Eldridge Industries.
This latest acquisition adds to the growing trend of U.S. and Indian investors securing stakes in The Hundred franchises.

The sale of the Trent Rockets follows a series of high-value investments across the competition, bringing total sales in seven of the eight franchises to more than £500 million. The estimated combined value of The Hundred teams now stands at around £820 million.
- London Spirit: A 49% share sold to a Silicon Valley group of companies for £145 million.
- Oval Invincibles: Mumbai Indians owners secured a £60 million stake.
- Birmingham Phoenix: Birmingham City FC owners Knighthead Capital paid £40 million.
- Welsh Fire: IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil invested £40 million.
- Manchester Originals: Lucknow Super Giants’ owners bought 70% for £81 million.
- Northern Superchargers: Sun Group, owners of IPL’s Sunrisers Hyderabad, purchased 100% for £100 million.
The final remaining franchise, Southern Brave, is expected to be sold later this week to the co-owners of Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals.
Where Will the Money Go
Funds from these sales will be distributed among the 18 first-class counties, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and grassroots cricket initiatives. Each deal now enters an eight-week exclusivity period before final approval.
With the Hundred attracting significant international investment, Boehly’s move signals the growing commercial appeal of English cricket’s newest competition.
