Maiduguri, Nigeria – The United Nations (UN) has announced a $6 million donation to support victims of the recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The flood, caused by an overflow of the Alau Dam located about 10 miles south of Maiduguri, has displaced thousands and caused extensive damage.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, confirmed that a joint mission comprising UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the Nigeria Red Cross Society visited the city over the weekend.

The team met with flood victims, many of whom had already been displaced multiple times due to conflict and insecurity in the region.

“We and our partners are providing hot meals and air-dropping food supplies to hard-to-reach areas cut off by floodwaters,” Fall said. “We are also trucking in water and distributing water purification tablets to prevent disease outbreaks. Additionally, we are supplying hygiene and dignity kits to women and girls, along with emergency health and shelter services.”

The flooding has affected more than 125,000 hectares of farmland across Nigeria, compounding the challenges faced by those already grappling with conflict and displacement in the region.
