Former Brazilian Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto arrested in connection with the investigation into a 2022 coup plot against President Lula’s inauguration
On December 14, 2024, Walter Braga Netto, the former defense minister and close ally of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged coup attempt aimed at preventing the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This significant development further escalates the investigation into Bolsonaro’s actions and those of his associates following the 2022 election.
Braga Netto was apprehended by Brazil’s Federal Police on charges of obstructing the investigation into the coup plot. A source within the police stated that the operation targeted individuals suspected of hindering evidence collection related to the conspiracy. The source added:
“Braga Netto was arrested in the operation,” emphasizing the gravity of the allegations.
The former defense minister had been Bolsonaro’s running mate in the 2022 elections and is now implicated in a larger investigation that has led to recommendations for indicting Bolsonaro and several of his allies for attempting to undermine Brazil’s democratic processes.
The investigation traces back to Brazil’s contentious presidential election in October 2022, where Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Jair Bolsonaro. Following his loss, Bolsonaro and his supporters allegedly sought to reverse the election results. A comprehensive 884-page report released by police in late November detailed a coordinated conspiracy, involving military officials and political figures, to challenge the legitimacy of Lula’s victory.
The police report accused Bolsonaro of actively participating in the creation of a coup plan, stating:
“The then-President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, actively participated in the creation of the coup plan, being directly involved in drafting documents and strategies.”
The police report revealed disturbing details of the plot, including potential violence. Investigators uncovered a plan known as “Green and Yellow Dagger,” which allegedly involved discussions about assassinating Lula, his vice president Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Some of these conversations reportedly took place at Braga Netto’s residence and included high-ranking military officials.
The report stated:
“Bolsonaro was also fully aware of an alleged plan by elite soldiers to assassinate Lula, his vice president, and a Supreme Court judge.”
Legal Proceedings and Implications
Attorney General Paulo Gonet is currently evaluating whether there is sufficient evidence to pursue charges against Bolsonaro and 36 others named in the investigation. Braga Netto’s arrest adds another layer to this intricate legal case as authorities move to hold accountable those involved in the alleged conspiracy.
Braga Netto has denied any involvement in the plot to overthrow the government, but his legal team has not yet provided further statements regarding his arrest or defense strategy.
Political Reactions
The arrest has provoked strong reactions from Brazil’s political spectrum. Supporters of Lula see it as a vital step toward safeguarding democratic norms and holding accountable those who allegedly sought to disrupt them. In contrast, Bolsonaro’s supporters have voiced outrage, claiming that the arrest is a form of political persecution.
Political analyst Mariana Mazzucato noted:
“This situation reflects deep divisions within Brazilian society. The implications of these arrests could reshape Brazil’s political future.”
